Learn to Skate/Play

The Billerica Hockey Association follows a structured, age- and skill-appropriate player development pathway, aligned with USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM). Players progress through clearly defined stages designed to build fundamental skating ability before introducing hockey-specific skills, ensuring age-appropriate instruction at every level.

Learn to Skate introduces new skaters to fundamental balance, edge work, and mobility on the ice. No hockey equipment is required at this stage.

Learn to Play builds on those fundamentals with full hockey equipment, introducing stick handling, puck control, and basic hockey skills in a structured, instructional environment.

Mite Development transitions players into cross-ice, small-area games and station-based practices consistent with ADM guidelines, emphasizing skill repetition, puck touches, and player involvement over full-ice competition.

Mite VHL offers Mite-level players cross-ice 4v4 competitive play through the Valley Hockey League, with team placement determined by tryouts, building directly on skills established in Mite Development.

Squirt and above continue this progression into full team structures, with increasing emphasis on tactical development, competition, and position-specific skill.

Each stage is designed to build directly on the one before it, providing a clear, connected pathway for players from their first time on the ice through their full development within the BHA program.

2026-2027 LEARN TO SKATE/PLAY

Beginning this year, Learn to Skate (no full hockey equipment required) will be run through Billerica Learn to Skate, where skaters build core skating fundamentals in a low-pressure, accessible setting. Starting in 2027, BHA will launch a new, association-run Learn to Play program, where players gear up in full hockey equipment and begin instruction with sticks, pucks, and hockey-specific skills.

Together, these two stages give new players a seamless pathway, from their very first strides on the ice straight into our Mite development pipeline. This structure lets us tailor instruction, registration, and support directly around our players and families from day one, while keeping learning to skate and learning to play as accessible and flexible as possible for beginners of every age.

Billerica Learn to Skate can be accessed through this link.

We will update registration for Learn to Play for early 2027 soon.
